How do others do it?

How do other busy pros find the time to write and post on blogs?? At first, I just kind of lost interest due to my new baby and mom's death, but now it's just hard finding the time. The baby (now 20 months) keeps me busy, and when I'm on the computer he also wants to participate! Work also keeps me busy and away from posting. Maybe those busy pros who do their normal day jobs and post to their blogs just don't sleep? Or the post while traveling to work on the bus or train (a luxury I don't have since I work at home). Anyways, In the past year I did receive two Eisner Awards (for Best Penciller/Inker team, and Best Continuing Series) for Y: The Last Man, and did attend the Orlando Megacon last week

Have to get back to work now... don't forget to pick up the latest issues of Jack of Fables and House of Mystery. Along with the latest trade paperback of Jack of Fables and hardcover collection of Y: The Last Man. Here's some of the cover art for the books...

Long time no see...

It's been a long time since I wrote anything for this blog. The reasons range from being busy to just not interested in writing anything. Well, my wife gave me an iPhone for Christmas, so I thought I'd do a test with Typepad's iPhone app. Hopefully more posts to come. In the meantime pick up the latest issues of Jack of Fables and House of Mystery. Inks by me of course!

I'll also be at the Orlando Megacon later this month...

JOSE MARZAN JR. RECIEVES TWO EISNER AWARD NOMINATIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JOSE MARZAN JR. RECIEVES TWO EISNER AWARD NOMINATIONS

San Diego, CA — April 14, 2008 -- Inker Jose Marzan Jr. received double nominations for The 2008 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. One nomination (along with penciller Pia Guerra) for Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team for their work on Y: The Last Man (Vertigo/DC Comics), and a nomination (alongside his fellow creators Brian K, Vaughan and Pia Guerra) for Y: The Last Man as Best Continuing Series.

Y: The Last Man tells the story of Yorick Brown; who along with his capuchin monkey Ampersand are the sole surviving males after a devastating plague has killed all other males on Earth. Accompanied by the mysterious Agent 355 and Dr. Alison Mann, Yorick begins a worldwide journey to unite with his fiancée, and find out the reasons behind the plague.

Marzan is a 24-year veteran of the comic book industry, having started as an intern at Marvel Comics in 1983 at the age of 16. Following his internship, Marzan attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts . During that time he worked as an assistant to various comic book professionals, and as an art assistant (or “Romita Raider”) for 2002 Eisner Hall of Fame recipient John Romita Sr.

He has continued his career in the comic book industry doing work for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Crossgen, and Disney Comics. He has worked with many notable talents such as John Romita Sr., Alan Weiss, Carlos Pacheco, John Byrne, Adam Hughes, Stuart Immonen, Greg Land, Steve Ditko, Bob Layton, Jim Starlin, and Mike Wieringo.  Some titles from his long list of credits include Dr. Strange, The Silver Surfer, GI Joe, Marvel Comics Presents, Roger Rabbit, Time Masters, The Flash, Action Comics featuring Superman, and The Adventures of Superman.

Marzan recently completed a five year run on Vertigo Comics’ Y: The Last Man, having the distinction of being the sole inker on the title over its five year, 60 issue run.

Marzan’s illustration work was exhibited at The Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition for the years 1989 and 1990.

...and the nominees are...

I've been nominated for an Eisner Award!

Pia Guerra and I have been nominated for Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team for Y: The Last Man! Pretty cool! Guess I'll have to dust off my tuxedo and start planning for San Diego! Y: The Last Man was also nominated for Best Continuing Series, and Brian K. Vaughan was nominated for Best Writer! Way to go team!

I can now call myself "Eisner Nominee Jose Marzan Jr". Woo Hoo!  Maybe now the work offers will start coming in....

Staples & HP Printer deal

Until 5/3/08, if you bring in your old printer (any brand) to Staples, they'll give you $50 off any HP printer (valued at more than $150), and recycle your old one.  Many of the printers also had HP rebates ranging from $75 - $100 (or more). Sure you have to lug your printer to Staples, and fill out some forms, but you can get a really good deal on some printers! If I wasn't tight on cash I'd jump on one of the color laser printers! That's a color laser printer for $150! So, if any one is interested take, your old printer in!

Work... Still Looking....

It's been a while....

Well, I'm still looking for work... I think that my bottle of ink at my drafting table must be dried out by now... Since I finished Y: The Last Man at the beginning of the year, I've only managed to land 10 pages to ink...
6 Green Lantern Corp pages (over Pascal Alixe) and 4 American Splendor pages (over Lora Innes who does "The Dreamer" web comic). It was great working with those two talented pencillers (and Harvey Pekar - not that I met the man y'know). But, it's not much, so I've kept a bit busy doing a few commissions, sending samples and reminding the publishers that I'm here (and available), doing some work in Illustrator, getting a new computer (new iMac replacing my sick 733 G4), showing Galina's mom around when she visited last month, and taking care of little Ilya.

But, it's getting starting to get tight, so if work doesn't start to come in, I'm going to have to find some way to generate cash... Commissions, sell art and comics, get a "regular" job...

So... if anyone reading this knows of any inking work out there, please drop me an email! Or if you have my phone number, give me a call!

off to see John Adams part III....

Run, don't walk to your nearest comic shop and ask for it by name!

It's been a while....

It's been a while since the last post... really I wasn't in the mood to post. There was Ma's death to deal with, work to do and the baby to take care of... blogging took a back seat. If it got a seat at all (or even got on the bus).

Y: The Last Man # 60 is out, or so I hear. I haven't gotten my comp copies, and I've been fighting a fever and a hacking cough, so I have no inclination to run out to the comic shop to check. There have been plenty of online stories about the series, and here are a few of them...
